With concept-based learning, teachers are able to connect different disciplines through a ‘big idea’ or concept, such as change, perspectives, connection, community, etc. The concept connects disciplines, knowledge, and skills and promotes critical thinking and inquiry.
What does this mean for concept-based learning in the primary year’s library? Picture books are an engaging way to connect students to the understanding of a big idea or concept. Through picture books, students are able to relate and reflect on what the concept is in the book and how it applies to other areas.
